WHERE THE BOYS ARE

HOME

Original release date (USA):  12/28/1960

This classic movie starts with a great flyover of the southern part of Ft. Lauderdale Beach starting at South Beach Park and traveling north past the Swimming Hall Of Fame.

As they fly along it is amazing to see Ft Lauderdale circa 1960.  Wow has it changed.  What is now a long line of high rise hotels and condos was completely devoid of high rises. The only somewhat big building seen is Birch Tower, above center in the screen. That was barely there, designed in 1958 and not totally completed until fall of 1960.

They fly over Bahia Mar. Las Olas Bridge is seen in the background. This is the bridge Tubbs stops on in the Miami Vice episode, 24, Whatever Works.

Then over SE 8th Street

Then there is a cut that I am 99% sure was filmed on NE 23rd Ave. in Ft Lauderdale from the bridge looking east down a canal.  The houses on the right are on Pelican Dr. and those on the left are on Sea Island Dr. in the area known as Seven Isles.

Then they show another home, looks like same area, but I have not tracked it down yet.  Location unknown.

Then there is a cut that I believe is off Las Olas Blvd.  Las Olas is in the background of the shot but I have to return there to confirm.

Then we see a country club or resort.  Location unknown.

Then it cuts back to South Beach Park.

Then we go 1200 miles up north to a mid-western university.  Not really, this was filmed at the studio in Hollywood, Ca.

According to the DVD information from MGM, all the university scenes were shot at the studio.

Then we see  the girls driving south. Most of this was done in the studio with the scenery projected around them. Then they pick up T.V., Location unknown. If you recognize any of the unknown scenes please let me know at cglide@floridamovielocations.org

Then we arrive at the Fairview Apartment Motel. Address on the sign is 3068.  According to the DVD most if not all of the motel scenes were filmed at the studio in Hollywood, CA. I am not sure this motel ever existed in real life.

Then we go to the Ft. Lauderdale Police Department for a speech.  Location unknown.

Next we see the Motel again, clearly a set.

Then we are back in Ft. Lauderdale. This was filmed outside the Elbo Room at the corner of Las Olas Blvd. and N. Ft. Lauderdale Beach Blvd.

This is the same corner where Miami Vice filmed the two uniformed cops pulling over and shooting the two thugs at the beach in “Whatever Works”.

They find a spot on the sand in front of the Elbo Room.

Bar Scene this may have been the Elbo Room but it has changed considerably. When they exit it looks like a studio set with Max’s diner next door.  Location unknown.

Then we enter Max’s Diner which looks like a studio set.

Then we return to the Motel before hitting the beach the next day. Again they land near the Elbo Room.

Then we go to the Sheik’s. As they walk out this too looks like a set. Location unknown. If you recognize this location please let me know at

Then we go to Ryder Smith’s house. This was filmed in Ft. Lauderdale at the end of Riviera Isle Drive.

Then we return to the beach outside the Elbo Room.  Which leads us inside what is suppose to be the Elbo Room but is most likely a set.

Then we return to the motel set before going back to Ryder’s.  Then we return to the motel. Then back to Ryder’s where we go for a boat ride that shows us a good view of the house from the water.

Then we go to a club where Connie Francis sings.  Location Unknown.

Then its back to the motel.

Then we go to the same section of beach, and then again back to the motel.

Next the gang heads out for a night on the town.  We see them go to The Tropical Isle. Thanks to Megan S., we now know where this was filmed.  She e-mailed me the location as well as links to help confirm the filming was done in Ft. Lauderdale at the Wreck Bar inside the Yankee Clipper hotel at the south end of Ft. Lauderdale beach.

This leads us to the police station, location unknown and then to Jade beach. Location unknown.  Both of these look like sets.

Then we briefly go to another cheap motel. Location unknown.

Then we briefly return to the Fairview Motel, then to Jade Beach before heading to the cheap motel in “Silver Springs”.

This leads us to a medical clinic.  Location unknown.

Then it is back to the Fairview before going to South Beach Park.

Where the film ends.
